Canada Work Permit for Farm Workers

A practical overview of Canadian work permits for agricultural workers and the documents that may be required before applying.

Canada Farms Jobs is an independent employment information website and is not a Government of Canada website. Immigration and work-permit requirements can change; always verify current requirements with the Government of Canada.

How agricultural workers work temporarily in Canada

The Government of Canada explains that the application process depends on how an agricultural worker is hired. Workers hired through the Seasonal Agricultural Worker Program follow the SAWP process, while other agricultural workers may need an employer-specific work permit.

Employer-specific work permits

An employer-specific work permit normally limits the worker to the employer named on the permit. For other agricultural workers, the federal government states that the employer must obtain a positive LMIA before the worker applies when the LMIA requirement applies to that job.

Documents from the employer

After a positive LMIA, the employer provides the worker with a copy of the positive LMIA and the job offer letter or employment contract. The worker uses this information when completing the work-permit application.

Seasonal Agricultural Worker Program

SAWP is a specific agricultural program for workers from Mexico and participating Caribbean countries. It is different from the broader Agricultural Stream, under which temporary foreign workers can be from any country when the program requirements are met.

Finding a job is not the same as getting a work permit

Canada Farms Jobs helps users discover employment opportunities, but a job advertisement does not grant legal authorization to work in Canada. Applicants should verify the current immigration instructions before making travel or financial decisions.

Search current farm jobs

Use our farm jobs for foreign workers page to identify listings that may accept other candidates. You can also browse dairy farm jobs and livestock jobs.

Check official requirements before applying

Work-permit procedures, forms and eligibility requirements can change. Always use the official Government of Canada immigration website as the final source for current application requirements.
