A 33-year-old Oakland County man was charged with killing and torturing an animal after police allege he used a hammer to beat a cat to death.
David Yn Hu was arraigned Friday in Rochester Hills on the felony charge — punishable by up to four years in prison — and given a $100,000 cash bond. He was ordered to have no contact with the cat owner — his roommate — in the case.
Hu is scheduled for a probable cause conference in on Aug. 16 in 52nd District Court in Rochester Hills
The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office was called to investigate an animal cruelty complaint on Wednesday at a home in the 700 block of Machette Court in Rochester Hills.
Deputies responded to a call of a person’s roommate beating a cat with a hammer, police said.
Deputies found the complainant standing in the driveway who told police his roommate was in the residence beating his cat with a hammer.
They found a door to a back room with blood stains, police said.
Deputies found the suspect lying on the floor with his back against a bed. The cat was lying on the floor at his feet. The cat had severe trauma to its head and was dead, police said.
The hammer used to assault the cat was found under a shelving unit next to the body of the cat, police said.
During the interview with detectives, the suspect stated he was angry with the cat because it bit and scratched him several times.
He told detectives he, “felt pain and let out his anger,” so he hit the cat with the hammer. He was unable to remember how many times he hit the cat, police said.
After the interview the suspect was transported to the Oakland County Jail.
Hu has a prior conviction out of Madison Heights for a misdemeanor charge for interfering in a police investigation.
According to the complainant the suspect has been living at the Rochester Hills residence for the last 6 months.
