Requirements:
Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should should be holders of the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD – Grade 12) or academic equivalency
Experience: Candidates should have currently certified as an Emergency Medical Responder or possess a certification deemed equivalent as determined by WFR (e.g., Nursing or Paramedic diploma)
Physical Requirements:
- The candidates must be able to work at heights, in or around water, and/or in confined spaces as required
- The candidates should demonstrate the ability to work on rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays
Other Requirements:
- The candidates should possess a Health Care Provider CPR Level C certificate
- The candidates should hold a valid Ontario DZ driver’s license in good standing
- The candidates should have NFPA1002 Pumper Operations certification, which is considered an asset
- The candidates must meet the vision requirements as outlined in Chapter Six of NFPA 1582: Standard on Comprehensive Occupational Medical Program for Fire Departments, in accordance with OFAI requirements
- The candidates should have successfully completed psychological screening conducted by a mental health professional of the employer’s choosing (note: candidates will not be provided with the results of or feedback from their psychological assessment)
- The candidates should have the ability to perform strenuous physical labor within high-risk and hazardous environments
- The candidates should be fluent in speaking, reading, and writing English, and able to communicate clearly and precisely under demanding, high-pressure situations
- The candidates must be 18 years of age or older at the time of application
- The candidates must be legally entitled to work in Canada
- The candidates should provide a Police Vulnerable Sector Check satisfactory to the City
- The candidates should have completed a pre-employment medical examination with results satisfactory to the City
- The candidates should submit a copy of their valid DZ class driver’s license and authorization to obtain an abstract, with results satisfactory to the City
- The candidates should provide proof of their current and valid certificate(s), licenses, and/or educational qualifications
Responsibilities:
- The candidates should be able to perform fire suppression duties to extinguish and/or prevent fires to save life and property under emergency conditions
- The candidates should be able to aid and provide emergency medical response, including performing rescue/extrication operations to prevent loss of life or further injury
- The candidates should be able to operate all equipment including pumps, hoses, manual ladders, mechanical ladders, generators, and automobile extrication equipment
- The candidates should be able to secure the emergency scene for the safety of the public and other firefighters
- The candidates should be able to drive and operate any WFR vehicles in accordance with policy and the Highway Traffic Act
- The candidates should be able to support the work team and allied agencies to maintain public safety
- The candidates should be able to perform station, equipment, and vehicle maintenance
- The candidates should be able to comply with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and other relevant legislation
- The candidates should be able to comply with departmental policies, guidelines, and departmental rules and regulations
- The candidates should be able to provide excellent customer service as well as be a leader in public fire safety education
- The candidates should be able to support fire prevention efforts by conducting demonstrations, public education, inspections, and investigations
- The candidates should be able to participate in training exercises and courses to continuously increase knowledge and skills to remain current
- The candidates should be able to be psychologically and physically prepared to respond to emergencies of any kind
- The candidates should be able to perform other duties as may be required
