Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have Four-year university degree in environmental studies, planning, natural sciences or a related field
Experience: Candidates should have four to six years of relevant work experience in the environmental field, including fieldwork experience

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should be able to navigate uneven terrain, walk longer distances, and work outside during inclement weather if required
  • The candidates should be willing to have overnight absences from home from time to time for site visits and meetings and may require travel throughout Ontario
  • The candidates should have the ability to independently travel to local or remote sites and communicate effectively with construction or other stakeholders
  • The candidates should have the ability to work on multiple projects with strong organizational and time management skills
  • The candidates should demonstrate the ability to work under minimal supervision
  • The candidates should have the ability to assimilate new tasks/information quickly and apply the skills to various situations

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should have knowledge and experience in environmental planning, permitting, field practices, and monitoring in support of linear infrastructure projects and experience and knowledge of environmental management systems (such as ISO 14001:2015)
  • The candidates should have experience undertaking environmental studies, assessment, permits, and approvals in various areas including natural heritage, aquatic/terrestrial/avian ecology, hydrology, hydrogeology, geotechnical, environmental site assessment, excess soil, designated substances, socioeconomic, cultural heritage, archaeology, and related fields
  • The candidates should have experience with Species at Risk Legislation and a strong understanding of natural environment features and ecosystems to enable timely, appropriate, and compliant implementation of environmental mitigation plans for construction
  • The candidates should demonstrate a strong understanding of environmental issues and legislative requirements and have experience with environmental permits, licenses, and approvals (provincial, municipal, and federal) and associated guidelines, standards, and best practices associated with environmental assessments, permitting, and construction effect mitigation
  • The candidates should have experience working with regulatory agencies, Indigenous communities, and members of the public and demonstrate the ability to tender and monitor environmental consultant contracts
  • The candidates should have strong technical writing skills for the preparation of environmental management reports, manuals, specifications, and tender documents and demonstrate knowledge and experience with Windows software (MS Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint)
  • The candidates should have a high level of initiative and problem-solving skills and should be team players with strong interpersonal and communication skills, proficient in written and spoken English, to effectively communicate with internal and external stakeholders and prepare technical reports
  • The candidates should understand the business implications of decisions and strive to improve organizational performance and demonstrate flexibility and adaptability regarding changes to the work and possess a valid Ontario driver’s license

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to treat safety as a top priority and be able to maintain HODS governance framework for environmental programs, including the development and review of policies, procedures, and standards
  • The candidates should be able to support elements of the Environment Management System (EMS) consistent with ISO 14001:2015, with a focus on environmental aspects to enable our employees and third parties to protect the environment
  • The candidates should be able to keep abreast of legislative changes and anticipate potential impacts to operations and able to identify the need and participate in the development of environmental training
  • The candidates should be able to support audit/compliance plans and participate in regular audits and corrective action plans to ensure compliance and address deficiencies and able to develop and track environmental work plans, budget estimates, and schedules
  • The candidates should be able to collect and prepare environmental-related materials for quarterly Board reporting, CSR, and other external reporting and able to facilitate environmental record-keeping
  • The candidates should be able to coordinate environmental studies for infrastructure projects and maintenance programs and able to coordinate liaising with regulatory agencies, Indigenous Communities, other project stakeholders, as well as internal groups on various aspects of environmental planning
  • The candidates should be able to develop contract specifications/RFP/scope of work requests, evaluate proposals, award and administer consultant contracts for environmental services and able to develop plans to mitigate environmental effects with an emphasis on natural heritage (including Species at Risk), groundwater, cultural heritage, and soils
  • The candidates should be able to engage with regulatory agencies, Indigenous communities, project stakeholders, and the public, as well as internal groups on various aspects of environmental assessment commitments, approvals, and permitting per Hydro One policies, while contributing to options and resolutions
  • The candidates should be able to prepare reports, documentation, and presentation materials related to environmental assessments, approvals, and permitting
  • The candidates should be able to document, organize, and file project information appropriately within existing systems including Borealis consultation software, Commitment Layer of GIS, and in SharePoint
  • The candidates should be able to provide advice, guidance, and assistance to project and asset managers responsible for new transmission and distribution projects and refurbishment of existing facilities regarding environmental aspects, applicable legislation, and guidelines, including corporate policies and procedures
  • The candidates should be able to prepare and present technical and organizational information to internal or external groups
