The Canadian government has announced that it will extend the post-graduation work permit (PGWP) for international students for an additional 18 months, as well as reopening an application route for Express Entry Canada permanent residence applications after clearing the majority of an application backlog caused by COVID travel restrictions.
This summer, Express Entry VISA will reopen.
International students will be eligible to apply for permanent residence through Express Entry, which includes immigration streams like the Federal Skilled Worker Program, Federal Skilled Trades Program, and the Canadian Experience Class, starting in early July. “The vast majority of new applications will be processed within the 6-month service standard,” the ministry predicts.

According to the official press release,
- Applicants will no longer be required to remain in Canada while their application is being processed.
- Applicants who apply for an open work permit while waiting for their permanent residence application to be finalised will be able to get work permits valid until the end of 2024. This will ensure that all permanent residence applications will be finalised before applicants will need to apply to extend their temporary status again.
- To support family reunification, immediate family members who are outside Canada and who were included in a principal applicant’s permanent residence application will be eligible for their own open work permit.

Step 4: Fill out your profile
Your Express Entry profile is where you give us information about yourself.
If you’re eligible, we’ll accept you into our pool of candidates and give you a CRS score.

Step 5: Get an invitation and apply
We send invitations to apply to the candidates with the highest scores in the pool. If we invite you to apply, you’ll have 60 days to submit your application.
We’ll process most complete applications that have all supporting documents in 6 months or less.
