Some temporary workers who are already in Canada may study for a short period without applying for a study permit under a time-limited federal policy. This can help workers add a short course or licence while keeping their job, but it does not create a new immigration pathway or replace a valid work permit.
IRCC’s current eligibility page says the worker must hold a valid work permit and the study program must last six months or less. The authorization ends when the work permit expires if that happens first. The policy page also says eligible workers may study full-time or part-time; however, work experience gained while studying full-time will not count toward Canadian Experience Class eligibility or Express Entry Canadian work experience points. The temporary measure took effect September 4, 2026, and the September notice says it remains in effect until December 31, 2027.
A school may ask to see the valid work permit as proof. Workers should also check the conditions on their permit and discuss any change to their scheduled work hours with their employer before enrolling. A co-op placement can require a separate employer-specific work permit if the co-op employer or occupation differs from the current one. Eligible workers in Quebec are covered by the federal policy and do not need a CAQ for study under this measure, according to IRCC’s current guidance.
This policy is for eligible people already holding work permits in Canada. It does not let someone travel to Canada to study or work, extend a permit, or guarantee permanent residence. Check the latest official rules before paying tuition or changing work arrangements.
