*The opportunity:*
The University of Manitoba is looking for a Livestock Attendant. This position will be primarily assigned to the Swine Facility and is responsible to the Agricultural Attendant 4-Swine Facility Supervisor for routine facility operation and duties associated with maintaining the health and well-being of all swine at the Glenlea Research Station.
The duties include but are not limited to, routine feeding, cleaning, animal handling and processing, maintenance of accurate records for production and research, assistance with research projects, teaching and training for on-site programs, and maintenance of standard barn and manure handling equipment.
The Livestock Attendant must be able to safely operate trucks, tractors, skid loader, manure handling equipment and power tools. Knowledge and compliance with animal care, animal biosecurity and workplace safety guidelines are essential. This position will be responsible for routine operation of the swine facility in the absence of the Swine Facility Supervisor, and will cooperate with other staff, students and research and teaching personnel in order to achieve the goals for the University research-education-outreach mandates. The Livestock Attendant may be required to respond to or provide evening or after hours’ emergency response.
*The qualifications and experience we?re looking for:*
* An agricultural degree or diploma from a recognized university or college is required.
* Two years of directly-related experience in the care and handling of pigs in a farrow-to-finish operation is required.
* An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
* Proficient in using a personal computer, specialized databases (e.g., PigChamp) and computerized record-keeping systems such as Excel is essential.
* Knowledge of the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) and the University of Manitoba’s animal care and transportation policies is preferred.
* Ability to operate, handle and maintain farm machinery and equipment, vehicles and other farm-related equipment is required.
* Effective verbal and written communication skills required.
* Interpersonal skills with the ability to interact effectively with students, staff and the general public, is required.
* Effective decision-making skills with the ability to use sound judgement required.
* Accurate record-keeping skills required.
* Ability to perform calculations, compile and summarize records, and prepare reports is required.
* Sound observation skills required.
* Ability to handle and care for animals is required.
* Knowledge of animal husbandry practices required.
* A valid Class 5 Manitoba Driver’s License is required.
* Adequate physical condition for lifting, carrying and handling heavy objects required.
* Must be free of allergies to dander, dust, odours, and ammonia.
* Must possess a philosophy compatible with animal-based research.
* Satisfactory work record, including satisfactory attendance and punctuality, is required.
