Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have educational qualifications such as a Grade 12 education or equivalent
Experience: Candidates should have One years’ related water or sewer system operation and/or maintenance experience

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should be able to work with minimal supervision
  • The candidates should have the physical ability to perform the assigned duties in varying weather conditions and extremes of temperature
  • The candidates should have the ability to perform confined entries complete with necessary fall protection equipment and air quality monitoring equipment

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should have experience in the operation of machinery and power tools used in water & sewer construction OR possess a certificate of completion from an approved Water & Wastewater program
  • The candidates should have Level 2 Water Distribution Operator Certification from the Saskatchewan Operator Certification Board and Level 2 Wastewater Collection Operator Certification from the Saskatchewan Operator Certification Board
  • The candidates must comply with all safety-related requirements and should possess a valid Class 5 Saskatchewan Driver’s License
  • The candidates must provide a current driver’s abstract from SGI demonstrating a safe driving record and have knowledge of the methods, techniques, equipment, tools, materials, and terminology used in operating, inspecting, and maintaining water distribution systems
  • The candidates should have the ability to troubleshoot various hydrant problems and customer concerns, operate all valves, hydrants, and other water distribution system appurtenances and be able to read and interpret engineering drawings
  • The candidates should have the ability to perform basic sampling and testing for water quality, using standard operating procedures and have the ability to make mathematical calculations rapidly and accurately
  • The candidates should be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public, civic employees, and contractors and have the ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, including recording data
  • The candidates should have skill in the use and care of computer hardware and related software

Responsibilities:

  • The candidate should be able to operate, inspect, and maintain water distribution appurtenances under the supervision of the Supervisor VI (Water Distribution) to ensure the delivery of safe water through reliable systems operation
  • The candidate should be able to carry out maintenance activities on the wastewater collection system to reduce emergency or trouble situations and able to operate and troubleshoot all water system components necessary for de-energizing, re-energizing, inspecting, and maintaining hydrants
  • The candidate should be able to inspect, troubleshoot, and perform minor maintenance on hydrants and able to assist with the inspection and minor maintenance of valves, service connections, and appurtenances
  • The candidate should be able to perform field sampling and testing of basic water quality parameters and able to monitor and maintain system instrumentation for water loss management, including flow meters and pressure monitors, and use leak listening equipment
  • The candidate should be able to assist with the installation, removal, and maintenance of various temporary water services and able to assist with the response to and resolution of water contamination events, including water main chlorination and de-chlorination procedures
  • The candidate should be able to enter premises on behalf of the City and assist with any necessary correctional work related to sewer clean-outs and sewer services cleaning to free blockages and restore service
  • The candidate should be able to erect barricades and direct vehicular and pedestrian traffic as needed and able to conduct pipe cleaning programs, including conventional flushing, unidirectional flushing, and swabbing to maintain water quality
  • The candidate should be able to maintain comprehensive records of all field activities and prepare required reports, including inspections, test results, and recommendations
  • The candidate should be able to assume the duties of Water System Operator and Water & Sewer Trouble
