Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have High School Diploma or GED or an equivalent combination of education and experience
Experience: Candidates should have at least two (2) years of related experience

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should have the ability to perform a variety of routine manual tasks in care, cleaning, and general maintenance of the building
  • The candidates should possess the ability to train, organize, and coordinate the work of the team
  • The candidates should have the ability to prioritize multiple tasks
  • The candidates should be capable of operating and using janitorial tools, equipment, and supplies
  • The candidates should be able to work a non-standard work schedule

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should have completed Grade 10, preferably supplemented by technical training related to the work, along with some related experience. Alternatively, completion of a recognized program in building service work or an equivalent combination of training and experience is acceptable
  • The candidates should possess an Ice Facility Operator or Refrigeration Operator (5th class refrigeration) Certificate from the BC Safety Authority and a valid driver’s license along with a Drivers abstract
  • The candidates should have knowledge of the operations, maintenance, and requirements of an ice rink and refrigeration plant, as well as overall recreation facility management and Knowledge of safety procedures and equipment related to the work
  • The candidates should have knowledge of basic preventative maintenance of pumps, motors, safety equipment, and other items related to an ice rink and refrigeration plant
  • The candidates should demonstrate knowledge of operating and maintaining a variety of ice rink facilities and equipment and possess basic knowledge of janitorial and grounds maintenance practices
  • The candidates should be able to maintain accurate records and files, ability to interpret, apply, and explain policies, procedures, and guidelines and be capable of understanding and following oral and written directions
  • The candidates should have knowledge and understanding of the Emergency Evacuation Procedures and knowing their key responsibility, possess good communication and interpersonal skills and demonstrate good client/customer service skills
  • The candidates should be able to work independently as needed to support the group effort, able to work effectively with a team, and capable of following instructions and procedures and have the ability to explain and demonstrate instructions and guidelines to others effectively
  • The candidates should provide a copy of their five-year ICBC Commercial Driver’s Abstract (N Print) directly from ICBC dated within 30 days of this posting and Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety rules and regulations, as well as understanding on utilizing WHMIS –MSDS
  • The candidates should provide a copy of their five-year ICBC Driver’s Claims History directly from ICBC within 30 days of this posting

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to perform routine to skilled maintenance and cleaning of ice rinks, dressing rooms, refrigeration plants, and surrounding facilities and able to assist in janitorial and preventative maintenance duties as needed
  • The candidates should be able to actively take responsibility for a variety of functions and activities related to preventive maintenance and repairs of ice rink surfaces and able to use the ice resurfacing machine to maintain the ice surface in proper and safe conditions by scraping, flooding, and painting lines
  • The candidates should be able to change and adjust blades on the ice resurfacing machine, conduct inspection checks, and record operating hours and machine conditions and be able to clean, inspect, and make minor repairs on the rink board system
  • The candidates should be able to inspect and assist in the rink glass replacement process and able to maintain cleanliness in rink dressing rooms, inspect conditions, and report findings to the supervisor
  • The candidates should be able to keep ice rink and facility areas, walkways, and equipment clean, serviced, and safe and able to maintain daily records pertaining to ice rink refrigeration operation and overall building maintenance
  • The candidates should be able to assist the Maintenance Technician in completing general maintenance and shutdown/startup procedures for the refrigeration plant system and able to connect and assist access for trades and contractors in completing building maintenance and service
  • The candidates should be able to review and monitor refrigeration plant maintenance activities to ensure compliance with safety regulations and able to assist in reporting and preventing facility vandalism
  • The candidates should be able to perform basic preventive maintenance and lubrication on pumps, motors, and related equipment and able to secure facilities and grounds to minimize property damage, loss, and liability and ensure safety at the worksite
  • The candidates should be able to maintain a cooperative working relationship with colleagues and others contacted during work and perform routine janitorial tasks, including cleaning changing rooms and washrooms
  • The candidates should be able to ensure proper labeling, dilution, and use of all chemicals, able to wear proper personal protective equipment at all times and be able to clean grounds and parking lots of litter, glass, or other debris
  • The candidates should be able to remove snow from sidewalks, driveways, and parking areas using appropriate equipment and spreading ice melt/salt and monitor building security and safety, including locking doors after operating hours and checking for hazards
  • The candidates should be able to play an active role in reporting and investigating emergency situations and make rounds of the building and grounds at regular intervals, inspecting doors, windows, and locks for security
  • The candidates should be able to observe appearances and conditions of premises and equipment, reporting needed repairs, service, safety hazards, or conditions requiring attention to the supervisor and replace light bulbs and fluorescent tubes and tag them accordingly if there is a ballast failure
  • The candidates should be able to coordinate the work of the janitorial team by assigning, scheduling, and assessing the completion of work and tasks and ensure quality control and best practices by inspecting work in progress and upon completion
  • The candidates should be able to assist in completing monthly workplace inspections as required, work independently with little or no supervision and able to complete other duties/responsibilities as assigned
