Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have completion of Master’s degree in library and/or information sciences from an accredited library school
Experience: Candidates should have minimum of 2 years of related experience

  • The candidates should be aware of current web development tools and trends
  • The candidates should understand intranet structures and development
  • The candidates should be skilled in electronic database and other bibliographic searching techniques
  • The candidates should be familiar with reference resources in print, microform, and electronic formats, as well as current developments in reference services
  • The candidates should be proficient in desktop applications, intranet and internet usage, and keyboarding procedures, to the extent where it may be required to demonstrate such usage to colleagues or library patrons
  • The candidates should be knowledgeable in methods, techniques, and practices of adult training, including needs identification, curriculum design/adaptation, delivery, and evaluation
  • The candidates must possess the training, experience, and knowledge to organize the work and its performance
  • The candidates should have knowledge of customer service techniques and protocols
  • The candidates must be familiar with all applicable health and safety legislation, understand any potential or actual dangers to health or safety in the workplace, and know appropriate actions to ensure the health and safety of staff in accordance with applicable legislation and City policies and procedures
  • The candidates should deliver library programs to a diverse range of users, including early childhood, school-age, and adults
  • The candidates should be capable of developing work plans, assigning tasks, evaluating performance, and supervising staff effectively
  • The candidates should possess well-developed organizational skills
  • The candidates should demonstrate effective judgment and independent decision-making abilities
  • The candidates should have a demonstrated ability to resolve conflicts and exhibit tact, discretion, and confidentiality

  • The candidates should exhibit strong interpersonal skills, an ability to deal with the public, and effectively handle problems as they arise
  • The candidates should have demonstrated ability to resolve conflicts and supervise and motivate staff

  • The candidates should have the ability to work effectively as a team leader and be strongly committed to providing quality customer service

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to provide accessible, innovative library and information services throughout the City of Ottawa, meeting the unique needs of diverse communities, delivered through a range of vehicles and reflecting a citizen-centred approach as part of Ottawa Public Library (OPL)
  • The candidates should be able to deliver professional library service in one or more of the following areas: information, reference and readers’ advisory, programs, collection development, bibliographic access and inventory control, systems support or development, maintenance of web-based services, and staff training and development
  • The candidates should be able to perform supervisory duties and may be assigned duties in children, youth, and/or adult services
  • The candidates should be able to act as the senior person in charge or exercise responsibility for the day-to-day operation of the library branch
  • The candidates should be able to Work within the context of the policies and framework of the Library corporate culture as embodied in the Mission Statement, Core Values, Customer Experience Guidelines, and the Canadian Federation of Library Association position statements on Intellectual Freedom and Diversity and Inclusion, with particular emphasis on providing customer service excellence
