Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have completion of minimum two years paralegal education program accredited by the Law Society of Ontario
Experience: Candidates should have minimum five years progressive experience working in a law firm or legal office setting performing paralegal or comparable responsibilities

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should be available for a Monday to Friday day shift schedule and be prepared for occasional requirements for evenings
  • The candidates should be willing to work occasional weekends, statutory holidays, and other irregular hours to meet operational requirements
  • The candidates should be able to work in a standard office and courtroom environment with minimal adverse working conditions and capable of lifting file boxes for the retrieval or transport of files

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should have experience in communicating effectively both orally and in writing at all levels of the organization and with external stakeholders
  • The candidates should have experience handling multiple priorities in a high-volume environment and fluent in English, including oral, reading, and writing skills and certification as a Paralegal and be a Paralegal licensee with the Law Society of Ontario, with the license in good standing
  • The candidates should have completed in-service training in Occupational Health & Safety, Respectful Workplace, Violence in the Workplace, Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA), Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI), and Active Bystander Law Enforcement (ABLE)
  • The candidates should be aware that all employees of the OPS are expected to complete all additional and new mandatory training as prescribed by the Office of the Chief
  • The candidates should continue their professional development, including maintaining professional memberships and certification requirements
  • The candidates should have working knowledge of the Mission, Vision, and Values of the OPS and possess knowledge of Civil, Criminal, and Administrative Litigation practices and procedures
  • The candidates should have advanced knowledge of Canlii, WestLaw, Microsoft Office (particularly MS SharePoint and Microsoft Excel), Dropbox, and Secure Docs
  • The candidates should be familiar with the Rules of Civil and Criminal Legal Procedure, Small Claims Rules, LECA or Arbitration and Adjudication Commission, and the Statutory Powers Procedure Act
  • The candidates should understand the Law and Rules of Evidence, Law and Rules of Privilege, Police Services Act, Community Safety and Policing Act, Coroner’s Act, Human Rights Tribunals of Ontario, Landlord Tenant Board, Criminal Injuries Compensation Board, Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (MFIPPA), and Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FIPPA)
  • The candidates should have oral, reading, and writing fluency in French or other languages, experience administering oaths, declarations, or affirmations, or commissioning affidavits and experience providing support on FOI (Freedom of Information) requests and Court Orders

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to directly support members of the Legal Services Directorate with legal requests, required analysis, and related information and conduct legal research using advanced legal research techniques
  • The candidates should be able to prepare various types of documentation, including Service Agreements, Memoranda of Understanding (MOU), submissions to public hearings, submissions to courts and tribunals, and media statements
  • The candidates should be able to prepare written reports and present them to members of the Executive Command and accept service of legal documentation from outside agencies and law firms
  • The candidates should be able to draft court documents (such as pleadings, affidavits, and notices) and file documents with the court and administrative tribunals an respond to third-party records applications, motions, and orders
  • The candidates should be able to assemble answers to undertakings and draft legal or court documents (such as affidavits, notices, pleadings, contracts) or prepare briefing materials
  • The candidates should be able to manage records, including compiling and filing court documents or tribunal records and provide legal support regarding Civil Litigation and Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario (HRTO) matters
  • The candidates should be able to perform general administrative work as necessary to support major projects and collect, manage, and organize a large volume of records in anticipation of proceedings
  • The candidates should be able to collaborate with internal advisory or working teams and counsel on cross-functional initiatives and proceedings related to OPS operations and interview potential witnesses for proceedings
  • The candidates should be able to prepare legal correspondence, documents, and pleadings for proceedings and provide legal representation at proceedings and assist counsel at the proceedings
  • The candidates should be able to calculate litigation timelines, maintain due case reports, and ensure deadlines are met and maintain a precedent system and prepare preliminary drafts of legal documents
