Requirements:
Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have completion of 4-year bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health and Safety
Experience: Candidates should have 5 years of sound experience in the field of Occupational Health and Safety
Other Requirements:
- The candidates should have experience conducting workplace violence investigations and violence threat assessments
- The candidates should have expert knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and its regulations
- The candidates should be familiar with the Environmental Protection Act, the Fire Code, the Transportation of Dangerous Goods Act, the Building Code, and the Workplace Safety and Insurance Act
- The candidates should have CRSP (Canadian Registered Safety Professional) certification or be eligible to obtain the designation
Responsibilities:
- The candidates should be able to research, develop, implement, and enforce policies, procedures, and programs in the OHS portfolio from a corporate perspective, and work with clients to do the same at the operating department level and guidance to Faculties and Departments regarding specific OHS
- The candidates should be able to oversee safety action plans and programs to ensure College-wide consistency, achievement of OHS goals, and establishment of a long-term safety culture and ensure practices and standards are in compliance with regulatory and legislative requirements
- The candidates should be able to identify needs in OHS requirements and organize changes to address these needs, which may include developing detailed proposals or business cases, including cost-benefit analysis, for affecting change in OHS programs or service delivery and design, develop, deliver (or source), and evaluate programs, training, or resources to drive compliance and awareness
- The candidates should be able to implement OHS learning programs to ensure that all Sheridan personnel are aware of their responsibilities under OHS legislation, including but not limited to new employee orientation, Supervisor Health and Safety Training, WHMIS training, slip and fall arrest programs, and back care programs (safe lifts and carries)
- The candidates should be able to provide advice and guidance to client departments in the development and implementation of employee programs and practices that promote employee health and safety
- The candidates should be able to work in close partnership with Operating Departments and Faculties to promote safety and health practices in the workplace, resolving operational matters where OHS-related issues arise or where employees are not compliant with College practices
- The candidates should be able to assess options, proposals, or business cases relating to OHS to determine the feasibility of proposed changes, and initiate research into strategic business issues to identify long-term development opportunities and provide input in situations where accommodation may be required, such as cases of scent sensitivities, chemical sensitivities, or mould sensitivities, with advice scrutinized in terms of its nature and cost
- The candidates should be able to coordinate third-party service providers for expertise relating to specific programs within the portfolio, such as hygienists, ergonomists, waste management specialists, trainers, and first aid
- The candidates should be able to analyze trends emerging from incident investigations, identify systemic issues or concerns, prepare recommendations to address and remove the systemic problems, and work with the departmental manager to address the root cause
- The candidates should be able to provide input and support to the Supervisor or HR Business Partners when the root cause of an accident investigation reveals a safety violation that may require discipline, act as a witness regarding the event, and support managers in their corrective actions or sanctions in cases deemed culpable and participate in other activities and projects
