Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates need standard educational qualifications such as a Secondary (high) school graduation certificate or equivalent experience
Experience: Candidates should have minimum of five years satisfactory experience at the Manitoba bar

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should be legally entitled to work in Canada
  • The candidates should be a member (in good standing) or eligible for immediate membership with The Law Society of Manitoba
  • The candidates should provide a satisfactory Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Search
  • The candidates should provide satisfactory Child Abuse and Adult Abuse Registry Checks and undergo a satisfactory Enhanced Security Screening
  • The candidates should have the ability and willingness to travel
  • The candidates should have requires an advanced or senior working level for a lawyer

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should have experience practicing civil litigation in a common law jurisdiction
  • The candidates should demonstrate the ability to develop strategy, provide legal advice, and make recommendations
  • The candidates should possess excellent analytical skills, including the ability to recognize and assess legal implications and policy options and strong verbal communication and presentation skills
  • The candidates should exhibit excellent organizational and time management skills, with the ability to work in a high-pressure and time-sensitive environment to meet conflicting deadlines
  • The candidates should demonstrate superior written communication skills, including experience drafting agreements and legal opinions
  • The candidates should have excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to develop and maintain strong and positive working relationships, including with co-workers, clients, and external interests
  • The candidates should have experience litigating for government, experience with class actions and experience leading litigation teams and experience assessed as equivalent, gained in another government jurisdiction or in private practice, may be credited for hiring into this level

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to prepare pleadings, conduct legal research, and prepare legal opinions and briefs and participate in strategic discussions with clients
  • The candidates should be able to appear in all levels of courts and before administrative tribunals on behalf of the Government and other reporting agencies
  • The candidates should be able to provide legal advice and assistance to departments and other reporting agencies
  • The candidates should be able to lead or participate in negotiations with third parties, including other litigants, other levels of government, and service providers
  • The candidates should be able to participate from time to time in the review and development of legislation
  • The candidates should be able to provide education and training opportunities for clients and colleagues
