Morning Shift: 7:45AM – 9:30AM
Afternoon Shift : 2:45PM – 4:15PM

Requirements:
Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates don’t need standard educational qualifications
Experience: Candidates don’t need experience although having experience is an asset
Physical Requirements:
- The candidates should be able to see vehicles, different colors (traffic signal lights), children, and traffic signal indications from close and far distances of approximately 300 feet with adequate depth and peripheral perception
- The candidates should be able to communicate with children, motorists, and parents, and hear vehicles approaching, honking, etc.
- The candidates should be able to assess vehicles stopping, anticipate children’s and motorists’ actions with general alertness
- The candidates should be able to walk on snow, slippery conditions caused by ice and rain, and inclement weather (i.e., cold, hot, etc.), ensuring sure footing
- The candidates should be able to maintain a walking speed of 0.9m/sec for approximately a 6m distance
- The candidates should be able to hold their arm up at shoulder height, bend the elbow, extend the arm above the head, and hold a stop sign (approximately 2 lb.) for 1 minute intermittently for a 45 min. period
- The candidates should be able to stand for approximately 1 hour duration in all weather conditions (i.e., heat, cold, rain, snow, humidity), and be exposed to dust and hazards associated with high traffic conditions

- The candidates should provide a Police Vulnerable Sector Check satisfactory to the City
- The candidates should provide confirmation that they are physically able to perform the essential duties of the position, as assessed through our third-party provider upon hire and every two years thereafter; the cost is covered by the City
- The candidates should have access to reliable transportation as work hours may be outside of public transportation operations
Responsibilities:
- The candidates should be able to play an important role in keeping children safe on their way to and from school by guiding them across roadways at designated school crossings during the school year
- The candidates should be able to use good judgment as it relates to traffic and adhere to the provisions of the Provincial Highway Traffic Act and City policies
- The ideal candidates should be responsible, community-minded individuals, with the ability to work mornings before school and afternoons after school
- The candidates should be able to receive training and the equipment needed to perform the job from the City upon being newly hired as Crossing Guards
- The candidates should be able to monitor traffic flow to identify safe breaks in traffic to allow for the safe crossing of students and pedestrians
- The candidates should be able to communicate clearly and effectively using spoken commands and hand signals
- The candidates should be able to be a role model, helping children develop the skills necessary to cross the streets safely at all times
- The candidates should be able to exercise judgment in determining safe opportunities to cross students and pedestrians
- The candidates should be able to oversee the safe conduct of students at assigned school crossings while waiting to cross
- The candidates should be able to document and report incidents to their supervisor
