Government of Nova Scotia’s Justice department based in Bridgewater, NS is inviting applications from suitable candidates for the position of Justice officer. Government of Nova Scotia’s Justice Department oversees legal proceedings and upholds law enforcement in the province. It provides legal aid, court administration, and victim support services. Functioning as a regulatory authority, it ensures compliance with legal standards, promotes access to justice, and fosters community safety through its interventions and policies. The candidates selected for the vacancy will be required to start the work as soon as possible.

Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English and French Language
Education: Candidates should have three years of undergraduate study
Experience: Candidates should have four years related experience in the relevant field

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should understand that they will be exposed to emotional and sensitive issues, and dealing with difficult or distraught individuals can create a stressful environment
  • The candidates should recognize that there is a high demand for accuracy and attention to detail while working in a high volume and complex service area, as errors can result in significant impacts for justice system participants
  • The candidates should be able to display a completely impartial attitude at all times, regardless of the situation
  • The candidates should recognize that exposure to a legal environment
  • The candidates should possess key skills including attention to detail, confidentiality, and the ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should have experience and competency in a computerized environment with proficient and accurate keyboarding, data entry skills and adapting to rapidly evolving technologies and procedures
  • The candidates should possess strong communication and customer service skills
  • The candidates should have experience handling cash and debit or credit card payment transactions
  • The candidates should have the ability to deal effectively with the public in a multifaceted and stressful environment, often in confrontational and sensitive situations
  • The candidates should have strong organizational, time management, and multi-tasking skills
  • The candidates should have sound knowledge of the justice system and government services for referral
  • The candidates should be bilingual with oral and written skills in English and French
  • The candidates should be prepared for assessment using one or more of the following tools written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks
  • The candidates should have one of the following educational qualifications one year of related experience, a two-year certificate or diploma plus two years of related experience a one-year certificate or diploma plus three years of related experience

Responsibilities:

  • The candidate should be able to provide a broad range of administrative support and act as the first point of contact for the public and clients of the Court system
  • The candidate should be able to receive and balance monies paid into the court and enter and retrieve data from automated systems and process documentation, adhere to policies and processes, and maintain filing systems
  • The candidate should be able to attend Court to call cases and swear or affirm witnesses, interpreters, and translators
  • The candidate should be able to perform quasi-judicial duties as a Staff Justice of the Peace as assigned and appointed under the Justice of the Peace Act
  • The candidate should be able to receive and respond to requests relating to all court matters dealt with by various levels of court by telephone, fax, and email
  • The candidate should be able to receive and receipt all monies paid to the court, balance monies received daily, and prepare daily cash reports and bank deposits in accordance with departmental account procedures
  • The candidate should be able to maintain court filing systems and work effectively as a team player
  • The candidate should be able to schedule court cases and monitor the court calendar of pending cases
  • The candidate should be able to provide a broad range of administrative support services
  • The candidate should be able to provide legal information to the public regarding navigating the court system, court forms, and procedures
