Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have Senior 4 (Grade 12) education, GED or equivalent
Experience: Candidates should have considerable experience in the relevant field

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should provide personal protective safety boots at their own expense
  • The candidates should demonstrate the ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions
  • The candidates should have the ability to stand and walk for prolonged periods and over uneven terrain
  • The candidates should be physically capable of performing duties of the position, such as lifting and moving objects up to 30 lbs. (flower flats, tillers, on/off trucks, wheelbarrows)

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should have post-secondary education, training, and/or courses in horticulture, which is preferred
  • The candidates should demonstrate general knowledge of conventional horticultural practices and commonly used landscape plants and shrubs
  • The candidates should have successfully completed or be willing to obtain a First Aid Certificate, WHMIS/GHS, and Temporary Traffic Control
  • The candidates should possess effective written communication skills with the ability to complete accurate records and exhibit effective verbal communication skills
  • The candidates should demonstrate the ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with employees at all levels of the organization, external contacts, and the general public
  • The candidates should showcase demonstrated ability in the safe operation and maintenance of equipment, hand tools, and power tools consistent with the classification
  • The candidates should have thorough knowledge of occupational hazards, safety precaution policies and regulations, and the ability to adhere to and enforce safety rules and policies
  • The candidates should maintain legal eligibility to work in Canada. If the successful applicant possesses a work permit, it is their responsibility to ensure the permit remains valid
  • The candidates should possess and maintain a valid Manitoba Class 5 Driver’s License and provide a valid Driver’s Notice in Force letter

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to perform skilled work in the care of perennials, bedding plants, shrubs, and landscaped areas. Maintenance tasks include weeding, watering, cultivating, staking, pruning, preparing planting beds with hand tools and power tools, integrating soil amendments, planting flower beds, planters, and planning
  • The candidates should be able to, in the course of carrying out daily tasks, practice established safety procedures in the execution of assigned duties and ensure public safety and able to diagnose for pests and diseases
  • The candidates should be able to perform responsible and skilled work in the care of perennials, bedding plants, shrubs, landscaped areas, etc., including weeding, watering, cultivating, staking, pruning, preparing planting beds with hand tools and power tools, arranging and planting the layout of flower beds and planters
  • The candidates should be able to maintain a variety of records, i.e. designing floral arrangements and calculating the amount of plant material required for sites designated to that gardener, keep seasonal records of plant material, and seasonal landscaping materials requirements
  • The candidates should be able to operate a variety of vehicles/equipment, including hand tools and power tools consistent with the classification and operate vehicles and equipment required for gardening maintenance operations, including pickup trucks, utility vehicles such as gators, and water pumps
  • The candidates should be able to follow established safe work practices, operating policies, and procedures and ensure compliance and perform other related duties consistent with the classification
