Requirements:
Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have Degree from an accredited school of law
Experience: Candidates should have considerable experience in the relevant field
Other Requirements:
- The candidates should hold membership, or be eligible for membership, in the Law Society of Saskatchewan
- The candidates should possess knowledge of the principles, practices, and objectives of providing legal services to a municipal corporation, which would be an asset
- The candidates should have knowledge of applicable Provincial legislation and regulations pertaining to municipal bylaws and a municipal corporation, which would be an asset
- The candidates should demonstrate the ability to solve complex problems and manage conflicts in a positive and timely manner and make clear decisions in a prompt and consistent manner
- The candidates should exhibit the ability to exercise a high degree of confidentiality and trust and establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public, the legal industry, various professionals, and civic officials
- The candidates should be capable of working as a member of an office team with minimal supervision
- The candidates should possess the ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing and should be skilled in dealing courteously, tactfully, effectively with customers and demonstrate research and presentation skills
- The candidates should have skill in analyzing, evaluating, and organizing facts, evidence, and precedents; and in devising solutions to legal problems unique to municipal government
Responsibilities:
- The candidates should be able to provide in-house legal services to the City of Saskatoon, including City Council, Committees of Council, the Administration, and the City’s Boards in a variety of areas including Litigation, Municipal Law, Planning and Administrative Law, Employment Law, Prosecutions, Real Estate, Construction Law, and Corporate Law
- The candidates should be able to act on behalf of the City in civil litigation, administrative law matters, and prosecutions at all levels of court and before various Administrative Tribunals
- The candidates should be able to collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to develop and implement policies and processes relating to legal matters
- The candidates should be able to coordinate with Divisions on identifying and implementing legal solutions to serve the business needs of the Divisions
- The candidates should be able to provide leadership and communication to assist Divisions in identifying solutions and assisting with the achievement of strategic objectives and goals and perform other related duties
- The candidates should be able to provide legal advice to Divisions with the goal of continuous improvement at the City of Saskatoon
- The candidates should be able to perform a complete range of municipal and corporate legal services, including bylaw enforcement, labour law, contracts, planning and development law, litigation, and legislative drafting
