City of Ottawa is Canada’s capital, in the east of southern Ontario, near the city of Montréal and the U.S. border. Our Ottawa River has at its centre Parliament Hill, with grand Victorian architecture and museums such as the National Gallery of Canada, with noted collections of indigenous and other Canadian art. Our park-lined Rideau Canal is filled with boats in summer and ice-skaters in winter. The candidates who will get selected for the vacancy will be required to start the work as soon as possible.

Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English, French or Bilingual Language
Education: Candidates need standard educational qualification such as Post-secondary Student – completion of second year college or university
Experience: Candidates need an experience of 2 years or more, in 500 hours of Lifeguarding and 500 hours of Instructing in an Aquatic environment

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidate should be physically fit
  • The candidate should be capable of safe lifting techniques and also be in a proper attire and footwear

Other Requirements:

  • The candidate should have certificates such as Current National Lifeguard Instructor certificate, Current Red Cross Water Safety Instructor certificate, Current Lifesaving Instructor certificate, Current Standard First Aid, CPR and/or AED certificates, Current Oxygen Therapy or LSS Airway Management Instructor certificate, Current advanced Instructor/Trainer status is preferred in at least one Aquatic specialty area (Red Cross or NLS Instructor, First Aid and CPR Instructor, Examiner, Instructor/Trainer certificate), AODA Accessibility/IASR Training, Aquafitness Instructor certificate (CALA, YM-YWCA, WaterART or other recognized certification) and Certified Pool Operator (CPO) is an asset
  • The candidate should have skills such as Applicable City of Ottawa Recreation, Cultural and Facility Services departmental policies & procedures and also be able to understand the developmental and recreational needs of children.
  • The candidate should have skills such as AODA – Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (legislated training required by 2010) and also have skills to City of Ottawa cash handling procedures
  • The candidate must possess the training, experience and knowledge to organize the work and its performance and also must be familiar with all applicable health and safety legislation, have knowledge of any potential or actual danger to health or safety in the workplace, and have knowledge of appropriate actions to be taken in order to ensure the health and safety of staff in accordance with applicable legislation and City policies and procedures.
  • The candidate having City of Ottawa cash handling procedures is desirable
  • The candidate should have an experience and demonstrated ability to train, supervise and evaluate staff and also should have conflict resolution and problem solving skills, with the ability to manage simultaneous demands
  • The candidate should be able to maintain a fun and safe environment and also have an excellent interpersonal communication, leadership and programming skills
  • The candidate should have good organization skills and also have Sound judgment skills in difficult situations
  • The candidate should have an emergency response skills and knowledge of specialized lifesaving equipment and also must have knowledge of aquatic programs and standards
  • The candidate must be a good role model, must be tactful, kind and patient and also must be calm under pressure
  • The candidate must be creative and resourceful, must be reliable and trustworthy and also must be flexible and enthusiastic
  • The candidate must have good written and verbal communication skills, have the ability to follow verbal and/or written directions/procedures and also must be able to work well in a team environment.
  • The candidate should be able to enjoy working with the public and also demonstrate teamwork and leadership skills with the ability to motivate teams.
  • The candidate should be able to provide a police record check

Responsibilities:

  • The candidate should be responsible for the day-to-day operation of facilities and service delivery for recreation venues and programs, parks & recreation policies, and programs for cultural services and also be able to ensure the operations, processes and services are customer-centric and efficient
  • The candidate should be able to deliver community recreation programs through geographically aligned areas across the City, aquatic, sport and physical activity programming for all ages, as well as programming to address the needs of individuals with disabilities and population segments who may experience barriers to access recreation services
  • The candidate should be responsible for overseeing the aquatic facility, programs and staff in the absence of City full-time staff
  • The candidate should be able to ensure that staff follow, and programs fall in line with, all guidelines, policies and procedures, work with the Program Coordinator in developing and providing training, staff scheduling and mentoring of staff; and ensure the safety and enjoyment of patrons in an aquatic environment
  • The candidate should be able to demonstrate supervisory and strong leadership skills
  • The candidate should be able to operate any required tools/equipment and also be able to work in a team setting or independently
