City of Edmonton’s Waste Services Department manages the city’s waste and recycling programs. It provides curbside collection for residential waste, recycling, and organics. The department operates advanced facilities to process waste and reduce landfill use. It focuses on sustainability and environmental education. Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have completion of education in Engineering Civil, Environmental or Mechanical
Experience: Candidates should have leadership experience in a waste management environment

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should operate as a strategically agile leader, able to anticipate business opportunities and influence enterprise-wide policy planning and initiatives and actively demonstrate values and behaviors supportive of equity, diversity, and inclusion in the workplace
  • The candidates should have the ability to collaborate and build trust, obtain input, understanding, and participation from the team and create a work culture capable of developing a high-performing team
  • The candidates should think strategically to address large, complex issues and manage projects while steering dynamically
  • The candidates should be aware that hiring is dependent on a Criminal Information Check satisfactory to the City of Edmonton, and there may be a cost associated with this requirement

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should have a Professional Engineer (P.Eng) designation, with the member in good standing or eligible for membership with APEGA
  • The candidates should have leadership experience in municipal and industrial operations or a related field
  •  The candidates should have a Project Management Professional (PMP) or other related certification(s) or designation(s)
  • The candidates should be able to cultivate strong relationships across diverse teams and stakeholders, fostering collaboration, trust, and mutual respect
  • The candidates should understand complex municipal subject matter and have the ability to build and support influential relationships with Council, external agencies, orders of government, citizens, community organizations, and internal departments and branches

  • The candidates should be able to lead the identification and prioritization of capital projects and development of the capital budget, which is a key component of the Waste Services Utility Rate file and capital performance reporting for the Branch
  • The candidates should be able to lead engineering analysis activities including the waste characterization program, data analysis, and process optimization
  • The candidates should be able to lead innovation and research and development for the Branch, including feasibility and funding of new processes and technologies and oversee engineering services standing arrangements including the work of multiple firms providing services for projects
  • The candidates should be able to anticipate business opportunities, influence policy, planning, and initiatives, and foster a culture of accountability through performance measurement
